Technical Sheet |
One of the last bastions of urban winegrowing, Château Picque Caillou lies at the entrance to Bordeaux City and was the home of Paulin and Isabelle Calvet and their family until 2026. The clue is in the name when it comes to the soil. ‘Caillou’ means pebble or stone in French, so as you might expect the vineyards are characterised by their pebbly soils, deposited by the Garonne river over thousands of years. This fast-draining gravel means deep-rooted vines and a warm environment from proximity to the city is perfect for ripening Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot the 2021 vintage is deep red black, with a nose of juicy black and red fruits, redcurrants, succulent yet very fresh. On the palate, soft, supple, red and black fruit has gentle, lifting acidity behind and fine, supple tannins in the background; some spice, nutmeg, with lovely juicy red and black fruit on the long-poised finish. The perfect vintage to drink whilst waiting for your 2019 and 2020 to be ready. Drink 2025 - 2035+
