Montagny 1er Cru Les Bassets, Domaine Laurent Cognard 2023

White | France | Burgundy | 13.5% | Full-bodied white

Mostly from 40 year old plus vines, from the top of the Bassets vineyard which always gives aromatic overtones; 500 litre barrels plus a single amphora in 2023, comprising 10% of the wine. Pale with a lovely nose of white rose petal fruit, tasty and bright, surprisingly restrained for this cuvée, leading to a more overt palate of juicy white fruits, ripe and soft with a deliciously succulent, juicy core and a fine finish. Drink 2025 - 2028

Visiting Laurent Cognard in his new tasting room in the Château de Buxy is always a joy and a step into the dark. In common with his neighbours, Laurent was wreathed in smiles when we visited, with his cellars nicely filled with two good vintages under his belt. Despite using virtually no new oak, in these sunny vintages his wines retain a gorgeously plump profile which gain in complexity as they age. Laurent has been slowly adding to his vineyard portfolio by any means he can – family links, buying or renting vines under fermage or métayage, but it is getting increasingly hard to find good sites up for sale, either in the Mâconnais or Chalonnaise, as growers from the Côte d’Or increasingly look south for more land.
