Montagny 1er Cru Les Bassets, Domaine Laurent Cognard 2024

White | France | Burgundy | 13.5% | Full-bodied white

Mostly from 40 year old plus vines, from the top of the Bassets vineyard which always gives aromatic overtones; aged in 500 litre barrels. Bright gold with a nose of leesy white stone fruit, a distant grilled note, citrus and floral, with a gorgeous palate of broad golden fruit with bright, citrusy acidity, leafy and racy with a lovely long creamed lemony finish. Gorgeous. Drink 2026 - 2030

When we visited Laurent last year, he told us that he was happy with his 2024s, both in terms of quality and quantity, and it was truly gratifying to see – and taste – that he was right. Although his production was down some 30% overall, his Montagny and Pouilly vineyards had around normal yields. It was his reds that bore the brunt of the frost and poor weather, requiring around a dozen treatments – but, compared with the Côte de Nuits where some growers did nigh on 30 treatments, he was fortunate. The timing of the 2024 Chardonnay harvest was key, with the best wines coming from growers like Laurent who could afford to hold back and then harvest at short notice, when the fruit was perfectly ripe. His wines are delicious. And there’s more good news: from 2024 his Pouilly Vinzelles Les Quarts, a wine we have followed for years, now carries the designation of premier cru. It is a wine which has long overdelivered and absolutely merits its promotion.
